1. Saguaros Only Grow Naturally in the Sonoran Desert

Saguaros are closely associated with Arizona because their natural range is limited to the Sonoran Desert.

That makes seeing them in their natural environment a special part of visiting the Phoenix and Scottsdale area.

2. Saguaros Can Live for More Than 100 Years

Many of the large saguaros you see in the Arizona desert have been standing there for decades.

Some can live well beyond 100 years, which means the giant cactus beside the trail may have been growing long before the roads, neighborhoods and cities surrounding the desert existed.

3. They Grow Extremely Slowly

Saguaros are in no hurry.

During their early years, they may grow only a small amount at a time. It can take decades for a young saguaro to become the tall cactus most visitors picture when they think of Arizona.

4. Those Famous Arms Take Years to Appear

Not every saguaro has arms.

In fact, many saguaros can remain a single tall column for years before they begin developing branches. Some may grow several arms while others never grow any at all.

5. Saguaros Can Grow Surprisingly Tall

A mature saguaro can tower over the desert landscape.

When you see one from a distance, it can be hard to understand just how large it really is. Standing near one on the trail gives you a completely different sense of its size.

Surviving in the Arizona desert requires some impressive adaptations.

Saguaros are designed to absorb and store water after rainfall. Their accordion-like outer structure allows the cactus to expand as it takes in moisture.

7. Saguaros Provide Homes for Desert Wildlife

A saguaro is more than just a plant.

It can also provide valuable shelter for birds and other desert animals. Woodpeckers are known for creating nesting cavities inside saguaros, and other birds may later use those same spaces.

As you explore the desert, you may notice holes or nesting areas high in the cactus.

8. Saguaros Produce Flowers and Fruit

Saguaros are known for their dramatic shape, but they also produce beautiful flowers.

Later, the cactus produces fruit that provides food for wildlife and has also been traditionally harvested by Indigenous peoples of the Sonoran Desert.

9. Saguaros Are Protected

Saguaros are an important part of Arizona’s natural environment and should always be treated with respect.

Visitors should never carve into, damage, remove or disturb them.
